Abstract

The development of modernity is closely linked to the rise of industrialization in Western Europe and North America. As people moved from farming to factory work, cities like Paris and London grew rapidly, significantly changing social and economic life. This shift transformed everyday experiences and how people viewed the world, making cities hubs of activity. Artistic modernity emerged as a reaction to these changes, reflecting a new reality focused on innovation and progress. The move towards machine production during the Industrial Revolution encouraged artists to explore new ways of expressing themselves, leading to movements like impressionism and expressionism. Technological advances, such as photography and mass printing, made art more accessible and promoted cultural exchange. This paper examines the significant effects of these changes on the artistic scene in the late 19th century, showing how artists responded to, interpreted their complex, and changing world along with examples to show the development of the human figure in sculpture accordingly.
