Abstract

The tree symbolizes life, growth, and regeneration in different cultures worldwide, regardless of its appearance in urban or rural landscapes. However, its depiction in paintings has been shaped through different historical and cultural contexts, such as natural landscapes, nature backgrounds for various subjects, or as a main subject in the artwork. In any case, they symbolise many ideas such as prosperity or decay of human life in social contexts, serve as a metaphor for spiritual growth and awakening in religious ones, and at other times as expressions of environmental issues opposing the effect of harmful practices and the widespread industrialisation around the world. The different themes surrounding the tree as an element throughout history have led to the production of distinctive artistic styles, both realistic and abstract, employing traditional painting techniques or new technological media. This research focuses on artworks by some contemporary painters who explore the tree as a plastic and symbolic element in the twenty-first century and the topics they address through different artistic and technical approaches.
