PATTERNS OF ARCHITECTURAL EDUCATION IN EGYPT ARCHITECTURAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS AT ASSIUT UNIVERSITY AS A CASE STUDY

Abstract

This paper seeks an answer to a central question that asks about the patterns of architectural education in Egypt and its position in the international classifications of architectural education programs in the world. To achieve this goal, the paper presents a historical overview of architectural education, and international patterns of architectural education, followed by an analysis of the development of architectural education in Egypt. After this step, the paper survey and analyze the current different patterns of architectural education programs in Egypt, ending with a comparative analysis of the most widespread architectural education programs in Egypt (Architectural education programs at Assiut University that represents most architectural education patterns in Egypt). The results of the study addressed the dominance of the architectural engineering type in general and in addition to the absence of substantive differences in the comprehensive (non-specialized) architectural education programs, in both faculties of engineering and fine arts. The paper also concluded that the current type of Architectural Engineering programs in Egypt is not like the architectural engineering" programs universally recognized. At the end of the paper, the study addressed important recommendations to the institutions that provide architectural education programs and the architectural society in general.
